How to Be More Mindful at Home

Often times when the topic of mindfulness is brought up, the actual benefits of it get lost in complex explanations. Mindfulness is nothing more than being more mindful in different facets of your life. That’s it, nothing more. But what does this mean?

It can be explained simply as being aware of your surroundings without judgement. When you eat, what you think about, how you react to certain situations you stay mindful and present in all things throughout the day.

If you were to be mindful in the home, this would mean being aware of your thoughts and actions as they occur. Being fully present and not making assumptions or judgement calls at any point during the day is a form of mindfulness.

Benefits of Mindfulness

Have you ever been so stressed out you couldn’t calm down? Have you ever been so worried that something was going to happen that you couldn’t focus on anything else?

When we find ourselves in these situations, we are not being mindful. We tend to dwell on the negative and think of worst case scenarios, even when it doesn’t make a difference in our lives.

What happens when you practice mindfulness is the exact opposite of all that. You become aware of your surroundings without having to dwell on every little detail that crosses your path. This means you’ll have a much easier time in trying to achieve your goals in life.

If mindfulness is practiced at home it can help reduce anxiety caused by lack of cleanliness, irrational thoughts about people or feelings of being overwhelmed by jobs that need to get done.

Being More Mindful at Home

This isn’t only about practicing mindfulness at home, but also about creating a more mindful environment in your house. This allows you to fully absorb the contemplative energy all day, every day, which will only benefit you.

Here are some ways to have a more mindful home:

Start a Mindful Morning Routine

The way you start your day makes a big difference in how you feel throughout the rest of the day. Start a simple mindful routine in the morning, where you are present during each activity at the start of your day.

Always Make Your Bed

Making your bed is a great way to start your day off in a more mindful way. Although this is a small task, it can trigger you to be more mindful throughout the rest of your day.

Simplify Your Décor and Organization

Mindfulness is hard to do when your mind is overwhelmed by how much stuff you have in your home. It can help to simplify your dcor and your belongings to make a more mindful home.

Eat Mindfully

Eating is one of the most important things you do all day. When you sit down to eat your meal, make sure you respect this time and appreciate what you’re eating.

Create a Multi-Tasking Corner

For those of you who work from home, a multi-tasking corner can be a great way to practice mindfulness. This area should have everything you need for your daily tasks to get accomplished all in one area, so that distractions are minimized.

Slow Down

It is also a good idea to just slow down with what you do during the day when you are at home. Mindful people are aware of each task they do, so doing everything at a snail’s pace will allow you to pay attention to all the small details.

End Your Day Mindfully

A mindful home doesn’t just start with being mindful at the beginning of the day, it ends with being mindful, too. A mindful home ends with a calm and contemplative bedroom.

Follow these tips and soon enough you’ll be “practicing mindfulness” in the home without really even trying.  Whether it’s starting your day right or enjoying your meal, being mindful at home will soon become a part of your daily routine and you’ll love it.
