Holistic Beauty: Where to Start

Living a more natural life is something many people are now embracing, as it provides multiple benefits. You can save money, have access to all-natural products, and put less chemicals and additives in your body, on your skin, and in your hair.

For holistic beauty, it is all about healing your entire body and using organic products, not just with beauty itself but anything you put in your body as well. You can enjoy the holistic beauty lifestyle by doing things like eating better, sleeping more, using all-natural hair and beauty products, imitating natural lighting conditions indoors, and even changing the way you think about yourself.

Get Rid of Toxic Ingredients

If you want to have a more natural approach to your beauty and skin care regimen, it starts with what you are currently using now.

If you are not currently using natural products, start taking a look at labels and ingredients to see what is inside. Look for things like parabens, sulfates, and lots of different chemicals that you probably can’t even pronounce or spell correctly.

Instead of using regular shampoo, conditioner, face wash, moisturizer, and other beauty products, you should start using all-natural products in their place. This can be a challenge because there are many chemicals used to preserve these products, but it is well worth the effort when you notice good results after doing so.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use anything you currently have, but you should be more conscious of the product, where it comes from, and what is in it. This is when you will become more familiar with labels and ingredients.

Check All Your Labels

As you might have guessed, you want to start reading your labels on all beauty and skincare products. It might not be realistic to go 100 percent organic and natural, but the closest you get, the better off you will be.

You want to get rid of any product that includes ingredients like parabens, sulfates, and other toxins. These are not typically listed on the label because they are preservatives which companies do not have to list on their products. You can still find these in many mainstream products, so you really need to be diligent about reading labels.

One thing to understand on labels is that “natural” or “organic” is subjective. The terms are used rather loosely, so it is hard to know what you are getting. The only way to know is if the product has a certification, like USDA organic or “certified organic” across the label.

Be More Mindful of Your Water Intake

Just as you drink healthy water inside your home, taking care of your skin includes what you are putting on it and in it. Unfortunately, tap water isn’t always the best option.

The problem with tap water is that it often contains fluoride, chlorine, and other harmful chemicals. These are not good for your skin, of course, but they are especially bad if you plan to drink them as well.

In order to make sure you have less toxins in your body, you want to start drinking more filtered water. Bottled water is not always better, however, because there are environmental concerns. There are many different water filtration systems to choose from, including under-sink models and even countertop filters that include multiple stages of cleaning the water for you.

Some Natural Ingredients to use at Home

There are two ways to use more natural skincare and beauty products: purchase them from the store and make them at home. It might not be realistic to make all your beauty products, but the more you can make at home, the more money you save.

For example, you can use olive oil and rose water to create a daily moisturizer for your face. There are many other mixtures of ingredients that you can use as well, but olive oil and rose water is just one option.

Here is a list of natural ingredients that work wonders for your skin, hair, and nails:

  • Eggs
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Raw honey
  • Baking soda
  • Activated charcoal
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Apple cider vinegar

You can make your own products with these and other simple ingredients that you find right in your own kitchen.

The more natural products you use at home, the better you will feel about the way you look and feel. You might have to spend a little bit more time in your beauty routine if you go this route, but it is well worth it because you are looking for balance — not perfection.
