When focusing on living a more natural and sustainable life, don’t forget about your emotional health. So many people focus on their physical health and environment but forget about their mental and emotional wellbeing.
The media bombards us with advertisements, so many of which aim to repair our self-esteem. This barrage of advertising tries to convince us that we have something wrong with us or paints us in an unflattering light so that we buy their product to make ourselves feel better.
If you’re stuck in this cycle of feeling insecure and wanting to buy something to make yourself feel better, you might want to turn your focus inward. Nurturing your emotional wellbeing will provide long-term benefits for you, and it won’t cost a thing!
Find Healthy Ways to Deal with Your Emotions
If you tend to turn to food or unhealthy habits like drinking or recreational drugs, then you are doing more harm to your emotional health than necessary. It would help if you found healthier ways to deal with your emotions.
Think about the emotions or feelings you tend to avoid the most. Do you feel anxious? Do you feel tired or stressed out? Is there something that is upsetting you that you try to pretend isn’t happening every day?
Whatever it is, think about these feelings and instead of giving in to them, see what happens if you try doing the opposite.
If you feel sad, go for a walk; if you feel lonely, text or call an old friend, you haven’t spoken to in a while. When you give in to your emotional needs instead of trying to ignore them or push them down, you’ll see that they aren’t as bad and unmanageable as you make them out to be.
Don’t Live in the Past
It’s great to learn from your mistakes, but dwelling on all of your past mistakes or perceived shortcomings won’t do you any good. Many people are insecure because they’ve made a few poor choices earlier in their lives, and they’re still stuck on those choices.
You can’t change the past, so you might as well focus on living in the present. If you are letting your past control how you act now, you aren’t giving yourself the chance to find happiness or inner peace.
Use Mindfulness to Be Aware of Your Reactions
Mindfulness is a great way to learn what you feel, when, and why. With mindfulness, you are in each moment, understanding and appreciating what you are going through presently, without worrying about the past or the future.
When you stop and think about it, almost every one of your actions reacts to how you feel. You make choices based on what you think at that moment, but you don’t stop to think about what this choice means or how it will affect your emotional wellness.
Don’t let your thoughts dictate who you are. Instead, be mindful of them and understand why they are there to make the best decisions for yourself while always keeping in mind what is truly important to you.
Work to Manage Stress in Your Daily Life
Stress takes an enormous toll on your emotional and physical health. There is no better time to figure out your stress triggers and manage them in healthier ways than now.
When you feel stressed out, anxious, or overwhelmed by your responsibilities and work, and relationships, don’t give in to the urge to drink or eat junk food. Start by understanding your signs of stress. There are both physical and emotional signs of stress, such as:
- Being overly tired
- Craving a lot of sugar and refined carbs
- Lack of focus or brain fog
- Chronic pain
- Digestive issues
- Mood swings and irritability
Once you can identify how you change when you are stressed, you will start tracking what is causing the stress. You can then start finding healthier ways to deal with the pressure, remove the trigger, or manage your time better.
Find More Purpose Behind What You Do
If you find that you’re making decisions or performing activities without purpose, it’s an excellent time to reconsider. Ask yourself why at the end of each activity or task you’re about to complete. Do you have a specific aim in mind, or are you just doing it because it’s a habit?
The more meaning you can attribute to what you’re doing, the more focused you will be. It’s excellent to have some habits or activities that don’t have a purpose, but if too many of your everyday tasks are void of meaning, it might be time to take a long look at how your day is structured and see what can change.
